The next version of dRxLaX is mainly going to use sprites instead of polygonal models, which gives me the oppertunity to liven the graphics up quite a bit (and hopefully achieve some anti aliasing by making the edges semi-transparant).
The link provided at the buttom of this post is a picture of how I imagined that the ship in dRxLaX should look like, only problem is that the drawing in question is as far as my paint shop pro skills go. What I need is either for someone to shade the image I�ve got there with 256 different shades of gray so that it looks a bit more 3 dimensional or draw a new ship concept for me from the ground up.
The demands for the ship models are that they fit within a circle, use greyscale colours only and that the artist has considered that the actual in-game ship is going to be around 32*32 pixels in size.
I can easily imagine that the game could have a multiple of ship models for the player to choose from, so practically every contributed ship will be included in the game.
Anyone up for it?

are you sure 32x32 is the size, cuz the ships look a bit smaller than that now?,.
well i'm not sure the res. so i will take your word for it.
I am thinking that rendering the ship in POV or some such ray tracer will be best,..
I'll let you know what i come up with.
If I didn't tell you yet, you can see some of my bitmap work in a little PC game demo called 'the poles'

yes i can deffinatly can do it!!! Actually i have had jobs drawing images for video games. I also make my own video games with my own drawn graphics. Please, please allow me to draw for your video game!!! Thank you

oh i worked for an online rpg called Age of Conflict, I did all of the graphics myself. The only problem is that the game went down because the creater of the game pulled the plug.... However, he and I are redoing it with much better graphics. well i just drew up you concept in 38 x 38 pixels. I will be sending you and email with it in it now. If you want me to draw it larger i can do so.

Well I don't think I'll rely exclusively on one contributor so you don't have to worry about being "the one". I'd rather include as much quality artwork with the game as possible and leave it up to the players to decide what to use (my own preferences would be the default ones of course).
But judging from what you sent me, you've got talent and should not worry about not having your artwork used in my game as I really like it.
But Zug-Island made me realise a problem. The current ship size is much closer to 16*16 pixels than 32*32 like I earlier stated. They are on the other hand rather hard to hit so I'll try to have them enlargened as much as possible without upsetting the gameplay.
If you could draw me that ship again in a much higher resolution (like for example 640*640*24bit greyscale) on a black background while keeping in mind that I'm going to resize it down to somewhere between 16*16 and 64*64, then I'll use that one for my technology tests for the new rendering routines.
The reason I want the image in that high resolution is that it'll make it easier for me to make the alpha masks with semi-transparant edges that I'm going to experiment with to achieve Anti Aliasing.

oh! i agree, i do really enjoy the original graphics to the game. It has a great arcade gamr from the 80s feel to it.

Aw man, I wish I could submit something, but my hard drive on the fritz and I can't even boot up my computer at all (I'm on my Dreamcast right now).
But will you be making it so players can each choose their own ship design or will everyone in the game still have the same ship just with different colors?
And please do leave in the current triangle style as an option, too. I love the abstract nature of it, the way you could imagine it any way you wanted. It really doesn't have to be in space with spaceships, it could be in your bloodstream with viruses and anti-bodies or Tron-like in your Dreamcast or for some reason I like to think of it as on the surface of a lake and the ships are insects. Since I can't send in designs, perhaps someone else could send drxl some bug designs or something, I think that would be very cool.

I'll let people choose their personal player sprite as part of their player profile. And of course I'll keep a "classical" visual mode as I'm really happe with the current simple, clean and abstract graphics style =)

i love the abstract look, too. some sort of screen warping/melting feedback might be nice to see.

i've had a go. the ship is 32x32, i've included different layers with some players colours. :)

Thank you. I'd like to see more than 6 shades of gray on the ship body for enhanced an "depth" effect.
I'll ad an alpha mask to the edges of the sprite and use it in my low level library experiments.
